DU Women’s Soccer Falls at Gonzaga, 1-3

Denver moves on to Summit League play at Kansas City in one week

SPOKANE, Wash. – The University of Denver women's soccer team (6-4-0, 0-0-0 Summit) dropped its final non-conference match of the season in a 3-1 loss at Gonzaga on Thursday night.

After the Bulldogs scored three in the first half, Denver rebounded in the final 45 minutes. Sophomore Liv Moritz put DU on the board with the only goal in the second half, tapping home a ball after the GU keeper made an initial save off a well-placed service from fifth-year student Jordan Crockett.

SIGNIFICANT STATS:
  • Moritz scored her third goal in as many matches and took sole possession of the team lead for goals scored so far this season with four.
  • Freshman Megan Murray earned her second assist of the season after setting up Crockett's ball on the Moritz goal.
  • Junior keeper Alina Santos' eight saves became a new season high for the Pioneers and were the most by a Denver keeper since April 27, 2021, when Nerea Arrazola also had eight against Loyola Chicago in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
  • For the 12th time this year, Denver held an opponent without a goal in a half with its strong final 45 minutes to finish the night.
  • DU finished its non-conference slate with six wins, tied for the fifth-most in program history and the most since 2013.
FIRST HALF:
12' | Santos dodged to her right to successfully block away a direct free kick from a dangerous spot outside the box.

17' | GU's Amelia Severn snuck a ball into the bottom corner of the net after a scramble inside the six-yard box.

20' | GU's Severn fed a ball behind Denver's backline, and Emily Todd got a touch past Santos and into the net.

31' | Santos made an initial kick save, but GU's Severn put the rebound up and over the line.

36' | After a video review, Gonzaga is called for a handball inside the box, giving DU a penalty kick. Senior Ella Frost stepped to the line but had it saved.

SECOND HALF:
47' | Santos snagged a ball out of the air on the first shot of the second half.

52' | M. Murray tapped a ball back toward Crockett, who immediately sent a service right into the center of the box. The GU keeper blocked the initial ball away, but Moritz gained the rebound and pushed it into the net.

77' | Santos again came off her line to challenge a Gonzaga attack and bumped a tricky ball out for a GU corner that the Pioneers successfully fended off.
