The Pioneers defeated Seattle 2-1 on Sunday night

DENVER – The [3/1] University of Denver men's soccer program will head into a rare 10-day break nine-matches unbeaten after a 2-1 win over Seattle on Sunday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

The victory was Denver's 100th in the history of the stadium that opened in 2009.

Scoring Summary
[3] Denver:
OG 53', Bassett 57' (Fisher)
Seattle: Onodera 54' (pen)

Significant Stats:

  • Denver opened the season with eight of its first nine matches against teams that finished in the top-40 last season and will exit that stretch 4-0-4 against those teams and 5-0-4 overall.
  • The Pioneers are now 100-21-19 at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium (2009).
  • DU improved to 136-10-18 when scoring the first goal, including 4-0-1 this season.
  • Sam Bassett netted his fifth goal of the season in the second half to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead. The goal also brought his point total up to 15 in 2024.
  • Bassett's goal was the 20th of his career to move him into fourth in Denver's Division I history.
  • Bassett's point total rose to 58 after the goal, moving him into a tie with Matt Harrell (1999-01) for third in Denver's DI history.
  • Lukas Fisher earned his third assist of the season and the 12th of his career.

First Half:
22' Denver's best chance of the opening half hour started down the Denver right. Dylan Akau got the first shot off that spilled to the top of the six-yard box to Sam Bassett, but the keeper closed down the angle well and Bassett's only shot was with the keeper a yard in-front of him.

25' Seattle had its best chance of the opening half hour on its first corner of the night. Andre Phillibbosian had a rip off a half clearance at the top of the box, but his shot curled wide of Isaac Nehme's post.

33' Nehme was called upon to make his first save of the night on a shot from the top of the box from Edgar Leon. Nehme dove down to his left to push it out for a corner.

41' Jason Belloli was wrapped up in the box before a corner was taken, but the whistle was blown before Bassett's corner and the kick was retaken.

43' Seattle's keeper ran into one of his defenders as he was going up to high-point a corner kick. The keeper spilled it, but Trevor Wright was whistled for a foul before Denver could score.

Second Half:
51' Lukas Fisher had the best chance of the night to that point, getting unlocked down the Denver right. His shot rose just over the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

53' Off a Denver corner, Fisher played the service and it was headed by a Seattle player into his own net to give Denver the advantage.

54' Seattle created a half chance and Belloli was whistled for a foul as the Redhawks player went to shoot it. Taketo Onodera converted from the spot to level the score.

57' Denver earned a dangerous free kick at the top of the area. Fisher one-touched it to Bassett who was standing next to him, and the Denver senior curled it into the bottom near corner to put Denver back in-front.

76' Jason Belloli earned a dangerous free kick at the top of the box. Bassett's attempt this time landed on the top of the net and out for a goal kick.

84' Seattle earned a dangerous free kick of its own at the top of the box, but Edgar Leon's free kick was also over the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
