Denver Women’s Soccer Opens Summit League Play at Kansas City

DU finishes five-match road trip with league opener on Thursday night

LAST TIME OUT:
Denver finished its non-conference slate with a 3-1 loss at Gonzaga on Thursday, September 19, in last week's only match. DU rebounded from a tough first half to score the only goal of the second with sophomore Liv Moritz's team-leading fourth of the season.
 
Junior Alina Santos had a DU season-high eight saves on the night, the most by a Denver keeper since Nerea Arrazola also had eight in the first round of the 2021 NCAA tournament.
 
QUICK HITS:
  • DU finished with six non-conference wins on the season, the most since the 2013 season (9) and tied for the fifth most in DU's Division I history.
  • Denver enters Thursday with an 85-15-13 record in conference matches including 39-9-7 on the road.
    • DU is 8-2-1 in Summit League openers (3-1-1 on the road). Overall, Denver holds a 19-3-2 record in DI conference openers (8-2-1 on the road).
  • Denver began the 2024 season as the favorite to win the Summit League for the eighth year in a row, topping the preseason coaches' poll with 61 total points and five first-place votes.
  • Thursday is DU's final of a five-match road trip that dates back to September 5 at then-No. 18 Colorado. The Pioneers will have been on the road for four weeks when they host their next home match on Sunday, September 29, against North Dakota.
SCOUTING THE ROOS:
Kansas City closed its non-conference schedule with a 4-1 win over Northern Colorado at home on September 22 with a brace, an assist and the game winner from Adriana Benassi. She shares the team lead for goals scored (4) with Madison Page. Three different Roos have played in goal for Kansas City with Riley Moore leading the way with six matches played accounting for more than 528 minutes.
 
DU holds a 5-0-0 record against Kansas City including back-to-back shutouts in the last two meetings. Denver collected a 1-0 win at home last season on October 12, 2023, after posting a 2-0 victory the last time the teams met in Kansas City (October 23, 2022).
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
DU returns to University of Denver Soccer Stadium for the first time in four weeks when it hosts North Dakota for its Summit League home opener on Sunday, September 29, at 1 p.m. MT.
