Getting To Know Triathlon: Alex Campbell

All-American sophomore continues to improve in the sport

Sophomore Alex Campbell is a newcomer to the sport, but she has already made her mark on the Denver Pioneers triathlon team.

Campbell began her collegiate career by winning DU's Aquathlon Eliminator versus Colorado Mesa on Sept. 2, 2023 and followed it up with two more top-10 finishes last season, placing seventh in the Battle in the Fort on Sept. 17, 2023 and fifth at Eastern Regionals on Oct. 14, 2023. The Kingston, Ontario, native then garnered All-American honors in the season finale by coming in 16th at the Collegiate National Championships on Nov. 11, 2023.

The 2022 Ontario Female Junior Triathlete of the Year, Campbell has previously raced for Team Ontario and has competed in each of the past two Canadian National Championships. She improved her finish from each national race, going from 14th overall and seventh among juniors in 2023 to eighth overall and third place in the junior category in the 2024 event on Sept. 7.

The Kingston, Ontario, Canada, native wants to continue racing competitively after college, and with her current trajectory, only the sky appears to be the limit.

Why did you choose DU?

"I chose the University of Denver because the combination of a welcoming school culture and strong academics. The supportive and elite training environment placed DU above and beyond other institutions. I know I will be supported in chasing my goals at Denver, and I couldn't see myself anywhere else."

Why Triathlon?

"There are so many aspects of triathlon that have caused me to fall in love with the sport. From the diverse, multi-sport training to the supportive community in which I have met so many amazing people, triathlon is my home."

How did you get involved in Triathlon?

"I have a mixture of roots in running and swimming. I have connections to the sport through friends and family, which led to me racing my first sprint triathlon in spring 2022. It poured rain the whole hilly bike and run, but I've never had so much fun racing."

Where is your favorite training area?

"Two of my favorite training areas are Manitoulin Island (on Lake Huron, Ontario, Canada) in the summer and Tucson, Arizona, for spring training camps."

Do you have a pre-race routine?

"I don't have a very specific pre-race routine, but I find spending time with friends before a race helps get rid of some of the nerves."

What is something that other people might not know about you?

"I can bake a mean birthday cake."

What kind of music do you like?

"I love all types of music, but especially classic rock and rap."

What are your favorite movies?

"When I can fit it in around training, probably Star Wars."

What are some of the other sports you participated in?

"When I was younger I did all types of sports, including hockey, basketball, soccer and volleyball, but I always loved running, swimming and cycling the most."

What is your favorite sport to watch?

"I enjoy cycling, track running, hockey, volleyball and of course triathlon."

Do you have any causes that are special to you?

"Working to get more kids in sport has always been special to me. Growing up, I spent time coaching younger teams to hopefully help this cause."

What are your plans for the future?

"I want to leave university even more in love with the sport and continue my racing career outside of school for Canada."
