DU Women’s Soccer Nabs 3-1 Win at Kansas City in League Opener

Frost nets second game winner of 2024; M. Murray, Baker add goals on Thursday night

KANSAS CITY – The University of Denver women's soccer team (7-4-0, 1-0-0 Summit) collected three points in with a 3-1 win at Kansas City in its Summit League opener on Thursday night.

Freshman Megan Murray gave DU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime before the Roos found an equalizer in the 52nd minute. Frost reclaimed the Denver lead in the 64th minute with what would be the eventual game winner, and senior Riley Baker put Denver up by two goals with her second of the season in the 78th minute.

SIGNIFICANT STATS:
  • DU moved to 9-2-1 in Summit League openers (and 4-1-1 on the road) with the win on Thursday.
    • It was also Denver 20th win in a conference opener in the program's Division I history.
    • Denver is unbeaten in its last seven Summit League opening match including five consecutive victories including Thursday's win at Kansas City.
  • Denver's three goals scored are the most in a conference opener since scoring four in three straight seasons from 2011-13.
  • Frost and M. Murray each netted their fourth goals of the season, moving into a tie with sophomore Liv Moritz for the most on the DU roster so far in 2024.
  • Senior Jadyn Goodrich had two assists on the night while redshirt senior Addisyn Hyrup had the helper on M. Murray's goal, giving both Pioneers their first points of the season.
  • For the fourth time in 2024, Denver held its opponent to a single corner kick, conceding just one in the second half to the Roos – compared to Denver's season-best 13 earned on the night.
FIRST HALF:
9' | Fifth-year student Jordan Crockett had the first chance for either time, trying to tuck a shot into the upper corner of the near post 25 yards out and forcing a jumping save from the KC keeper.

25' | M. Murray connected in stride with a terrific service from Hyrup, carried the ball into the box and chipped it over the keeper and into the back of the net.

38' | Frost threaded the ball up to sophomore Michaela McGowan, who got open in the box but had the ball snatched from her feet by the KC keeper.

SECOND HALF:
52' | Junior goalkeeper Alina Santos made a save on a UMKC attack inside her box, but Kansas City's Kayda Kamolz found the rebound and pushed it past Santos to level the score at 1-1.

54' | Goodrich got open inside the six-yard box and attempted to lift the ball over the keeper, who made the easy save.

64' | After a scramble between multiple DU attackers and the Kansas City keeper at the edge of the 18-yard box, Goodrich quickly tapped the Frost, who pushed a bouncing ball between two defenders and into the back of the net.

77' | Hyrup sent a cross in from near the corner flag. The ball simultaneously bounced off Goodrich and a Kansas City defender and as it headed toward the ground, Baker approached to push it across the line.

80' | Frost went looking for her second of the night after the Pioneers took a corner short, but the KC keeper pushed the dipping ball clear of the crossbar.
