Pioneers secure 3-2 win against Montana State

LINCOLN, NE --After falling in a close first set, the University of Denver volleyball team battled back with a five set victory over the Montana State Bobcats, Thursday at Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The win improved Denver's overall record to 2-2 on the season.

The Pioneers were led by a double-double from Cassie Davis, who registered 23 kills and 13 digs on the day. Genevieve Lewis also added 25 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Alayna Finucan chipped in with 22 digs alongside eight blocks from Molly Mirabelli.

SET 1 | The Pioneers found themselves in an early deficit, dropping the first set 25-21. Montana State grabbed the advantage for good at 11-10 in a set that was tied up nine times before the Bobcats took control.

SET 2 | Denver fired back from a first-set loss to take set two 25-20, evening the match at 1-1. The Pioneers grabbed control of the set lead early on at 5-4 and never trailed. Denver opened its biggest lead of the stanza, five points, to close out the set, totaling 17 kills in the process. The Denver offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Denver grabbed a 2-1 match lead after taking down the Bobcats in the third set. The Pioneers persevered in a back-and-forth set to win 28-26 in a stanza that featured seven lead changes and was tied 16 times. Neither team opened up a lead of more than four points along the way. The Pioneers racked up 18 kills over the course of the set.

SET 4 | Denver couldn't keep the win streak going, as the Bobcats forced a fifth set with a 25-22 fourth-set win. The Pioneers fell in a back-and-forth set, losing in a stanza that featured four lead changes and was tied seven times. Neither team opened up a lead of more than four points along the way.

SET 5 | Denver opened a two sets to one lead and held off Montana State's comeback attempt, which included a fourth set victory, to win the fifth set 15-12 and the match 3-2. The Pioneers endured a back-and-forth final set to emerge victorious in a stanza that featured three lead changes and was tied four times. Neither team led by more than three points in the set.
