Pioneers Defeat the Citadel in Four Sets

LINCOLN, NE --The Denver volleyball team fought back after dropping set one to secure a 3-1 win (19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20) over the Citadel Bulldogs, Friday at Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The win improved Denver's overall record to 3-2 on the season.

The Pioneers were led by a double-double from Cassie Davis, who registered 16 kills and 12 digs on the day. Genevieve Lewis also added 11 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Alayna Finucan chipped in for with 27 digs to go with six blocks from Molly Mirabelli. Mirabelli recorded a perfect 10 kills and zero errors against the Bulldogs.

How It Happened

SET 1 | In spite of a pinpoint serving effort, the Pioneers dropped the first set 25-19. Denver recorded five aces in the set loss.

SET 2 | Denver fought back from a first-set loss to take set two 25-23, tying the match at 1-1. The Pioneers persevered in a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured three lead changes and was tied 12 times. Neither team led by more than three points along the way. Denver's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Citadel attacks in the stanza.

SET 3 | Denver grabbed another win in the third set to make it a 2-1 match. The Pioneers took the lead for good at 16-15 in a set that showcased two lead changes before Denver took over in the second half of the stanza. They then carried that lead to a 25-23 set win.

SET 4 | Denver closed out the match with a 25-20 fourth-set victory, winning their third set in a row. The Pioneers grabbed control of the set at 5-4 and held the lead the rest of the way. Denver led by as many as nine points at 23-14 before closing out the stanza, collecting 17 kills in the set.
