KANSAS CITY, MO -- Angelina Robles knocked down a game-tying shot with 10 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime, but the Denver women's basketball team was outscored 15-8 in the extra period and fell, 73-66, to the UMKC Kangaroos on the road Wednesday.
The Pioneers (7-11, 0-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Jordan Jones, who had 24 points and nine rebounds. Angelina Robles tacked on 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals and Coryn Watts helped out with 11 points and three steals.
Jones pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Denver, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into five second chance points.
The Denver defense caused its share of mistakes in Wednesday's game, forcing 14 UMKC turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Watts' three steals led the way individually for the Pioneers.
How It Happened
After falling behind 12-1, Denver went on a 12-0 run with 6:12 left in the first quarter to take a 13-12 lead. The Pioneers then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 14-13 advantage. Denver capitalized on four UMKC turnovers in the period, turning them into four points on the other end of the floor.
UMKC rallied to take an 18-16 lead before Denver went on a 5-0 run starting at the 7:43 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Watts, to take a 21-18 lead. The Kangaroos cut into that lead, but the Pioneers still enjoyed a 27-25 advantage heading into halftime. Denver dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 13 points close to the basket.
Denver surrendered its halftime lead until, with the game tied at 30-30 they went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jones, to grab a 38-30 lead with 3:52 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Kangaroos had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Pioneers still entered the fourth quarter with a 40-39 edge. Denver played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 13 points in the paint.
Denver then surrendered that advantage as UMKC forced overtime by tying things up at 58-58 by the end of the fourth. Denver took advantage of three UMKC turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
UMKC then took control in overtime and won 73-66.
