Pioneers Light It Up from Behind the Arc, Fall to Oral Roberts on Senior Day

DENVER, CO -- Mary Wilson totaled 21 points and Emma Smith added 21, but the Denver women's basketball team fell to the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles 79-72 at home Saturday.

Wilson and Smith's stellar scoring performances led the Pioneers (7-12, 0-6) in the contest. Smith added seven rebounds and seven assists. Jordan Jones also helped out with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Denver offense was very productive from deep, making 16 threes on 33 attempts. Wilson was the most prolific shooter for the Pioneers, draining seven treys in the contest.

How It Happened

Denver started out the scoring by going on a 5-0 run, culminating in a three from Emily Counsel, to take an early lead with 8:46 left in the first quarter. The Pioneers then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 28-20 advantage. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 28 points.

Denver kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 2:39 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Smith, to increase its lead to 45-36. The Golden Eagles cut into that lead, but the Pioneers still enjoyed a 45-37 advantage heading into halftime. Denver was strong from deep in the period, knocking down five three-point shots to account for 15 of its 17 points.

Oral Roberts then took a 50-48 lead following intermission before Denver went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Angelina Robles, to grab a 56-50 lead with 2:51 to go in the third. The Pioneers held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 61-55 edge. Denver knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 16 total points.

Oral Roberts then erased the Denver lead in the game's final quarter for a 79-72 comeback victory. Denver pulled down one offensive rebounds to score two second chance points out of 11 total in the period
