DU Women’s Tennis Drops Opening Match at ITA Kickoff Weekend

Denver grabs doubles point before falling, 1-4, to TCU; will play USF on Saturday

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of Denver women's tennis team (0-2, 0-0 Summit) began play as a No. 3 seed at the 2025 ITA Kickoff Weekend with a win in doubles before falling, 1-4, to No. 2 seed TCU on Friday.

Doubles:
Denver grabbed the day's first point with matching 6-4 wins in Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. Juniors Claudia Martinez de Velasco and Louise Wikander moved to 2-0 on the season together while Denver's top team of senior Andrea Burguete Beltran and junior Marley Lambert collected their first dual win and did so over the No. 12-ranked team of Otway/Pascual from TCU.

In an unfinished match, junior Hana Bečirovič Novak and freshman Natálie Cinková held a 5-4 lead on the No. 3 court.

Singles:
TCU won the first four singles matches to wrap up, though DU players had forced third sets when they were abandoned after the dual was clinched. Both Burguete Beltran and Cinková dropped their opening sets, 4-6, before beginning their comebacks. The Denver senior flipped the script in her second set, collecting a dominant 6-2 win to get to a deciding set that was on serve at 2-2 when it was left unfinished.

Cinkova kept her second set tight much of the way through and found herself in a tiebreak, which she won to push things to a third, though the final set was unable to get started.

Martinez de Velasco drew a tough match up at No. 4 singles, facing off against the No. 100-ranked Tomi Main. Her doubles partner Wikander stayed competitive in the No. 2 match as well. Bečirovič Novak did not give up after losing her first set, putting up a fight in the second before surrendering a decisive break late.
