GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of Denver volleyball team defeated the North Dakota Fighting Hawks in straight sets (25-16, 25-14, 25-17) on Thursday night in Grand Forks.
LEADERS:
Genevieve Lewis led the Pioneers with 10 kills on 16 swings and added three blocks in the victory.Â
Ava Reynolds added seven kill, two aces and five digs.
Ilayda Eren tallied 16 assists on Thursday night.
Maddie Winkler led the defense with 13 kills and
Kate Perryman added four blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE
The Pioneers trailed by as many as three to start the match, and trailed for much of the first set. Denver responded with a late 7-0 run to go up 12-8 and did not relinquish the lead en route to a 25-16 victory.
SET TWO
Denver and UND once again battled to start the set, but once again the Pioneers' offense was able to take a large run to earn a 12-5 lead. The Fighting Hawks attempted to cut the deficit but Denver kept the momentum rolling with a 25-14 win.
SET THREE
Denver took an early 3-0 lead before North Dakota bounced back to take a 12-8 lead, their largest of the match. Denver's offense once again responded with an 11-1 run to go up 19-13 and ultimately win the set 25-17.
