No. 4 Denver Sweeps Weekend Series vs. No. 17 Colorado College

Pioneers stretched win streak to five games with 3-2 win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The No. 4 University of Denver hockey team completed the weekend sweep of the No. 17 Colorado College Tigers on Saturday night with a 3-2 win at Ed Robson Arena.

Denver (8-3-1, 3-0-0 NCHC) stretched its season-long winning streak to five games and earned series sweeps on back-to-back weekends. The Pioneers beat the defending national champion Western Michigan Broncos on the road last week before opening the series against CC (6-4-1, 1-3-1 NCHC) on Friday with a 2-1 overtime victory at Magness Arena.

Junior Boston Buckberger, sophomore Jake Fisher and freshman Eric Jamieson all scored for Denver, while Cale Ashcroft, Hagen Burrows, Clarke Caswell, Sam Harris, Rieger Lorenz and Brendan McMorrow each had an assist.

DU freshman goaltender Quentin Miller stopped 38-of-40 shots faced, including 19 in the third period.

Buckberger scored on the power play with 4:10 left in the third period in what was the eventual game-winner and marked the first time he had tallied in consecutive games in his career. He netted his first career OT goal in Friday's win.

Fisher opened the night's scoring by tallying his fourth marker of the season 2:37 into the game on a rush up the ice, and Jamieson doubled Denver's lead with 3:26 remaining in the second period on a wrist shot that beat Colorado College netminder Kaidan Mbereko with a screen in front.

CC's Brandon Lisowsky scored on the power play 49 seconds into the third, and Wilson Bjorck tallied with 1:47 remaining to make it a 3-2 game. Mbereko stopped 23 shots in the loss for the Tigers.

Denver went 1-for-4 on the power play while Colorado College scored on its lone man advantage.

While DU won the weekend series over CC, the Gold Pan trophy will be decided when the teams meet again on Feb. 6-7 due to Friday's contest needing overtime. Denver needs to earn just one point to keep the trophy for a seventh-straight season while the Tigers will need to win both of those games in regulation.

UP NEXT: DU continues its three-game road swing next weekend when it travels to play the Arizona State Sun Devils. Friday's game from Tempe begins at 7 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on Altitude TV. Saturday's start time is 5 p.m. MT. Both games will also be available on NCHC.tv.

POSTGAME NOTES
  • The Pioneers are on a season-long five-game winning streak and haven't lost in regulation in six straight contests dating back to Oct. 31 vs. Alaska Anchorage.
  • Denver is improved to 204-125-21 all-time against Colorado College and have won four straight games in the series.  DU is 7-1-0 in the last eight meetings against CC.
  • The Pioneers are now 78-66-10 all-time on the road vs. the Tigers, including 7-2-0 at Ed Robson Arena.
  • Boston Buckberger scored in back-to-back games for the first time in his career and is on a three-game point streak (2g/2a). Both goals were game-winners.
  • Sam Harris (1g/2a) and Rieger Lorenz (1g/3a) are also on three-game point streaks, with Lorenz's three-game assist streak tied for the longest of the season by a Pioneer.
  • Freshman goaltender Quentin Miller made his ninth consecutive start in net.
  • Eric Pohlkamp had his career-long four-game goal streak come to an end (4g/2a). It was the longest stretch by a DU defenseman since at least the 2002-03 season and was the longest goal streak by a blueliner in NCHC history.
  • Garrett Brown was injured with 13 seconds left in the first period and was taken to an area hospital as a precaution. He was cleared and discharged from the hospital that evening.

QUOTABLES
Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach David Carle
On an update on Garrett Brown: He's (back) here (at the arena) so there's the fact that he's been released from the hospital. I know about as much as you do. You can infer that things went well at the hospital and now he's back with the guys, which is wonderful news. It was precautionary, but they thought they would probably have to keep him overnight is what I heard. So the fact that he is back is really positive. Big relief obviously for our team and our staff and his parents."

On what he told the team going into the second period: "We just talked to them right away about a quick update that we have (on Brown). Our medical team, obviously the EMT people that were here to work with him, and they were able to communicate to me what was going on, I just shared that quick with the guys. And again, the word precautionary was used so that is always a nice thing that you can share with the guys. So that probably gave them some relief, and I give them a lot of credit for locking in. I thought we had a really nice second period and played the game the right way that we needed to."

On buckling down in the third period: "Last night we were real happy with our effort and the shots were even, and we won the game and came from behind. And tonight it just feels a little different because it felt like we were in the trenches all night together, battling and sacrificing for one another. The power play was obviously huge in the third, 4-on-3 on the fly. You go from 5-on-4 to 4-on-4 to 4-on-3, not an easy situation but something that (assistant coach) Dallas [Ferguson] has talked about with our power-play units in the last couple of weeks, so they're able to go out on the fly and execute. That was obviously huge and faceoffs played a factor into the third on a lot of their shots – a lot of them did come from the outside. [Quentin Miller] made a few certainly from inside that were world-class. But I thought we did a nice job at least on our rush, improving on the night before to tonight of keeping them to the outside. Again a lot of whistles, a lot of faceoffs. They kind of owned us on the dot - especially in the third. I think that led to a lot of their possession as well."

Senior Defenseman Kent Anderson
On the rivalry with Colorado College: "Yeah, it's always exciting to play CC. You know, playing in this building and at home, it's always a great environment. Tight games, and it's hard fought, and it feels good to get the win."

On the five-game winning streak: "It's just buying-in together. It's all playing the right way, I think being connected, communicating with each other and putting pucks in the net."

On the upcoming game against Arizona State: "We always want to continue to learn and grow. Watch the video from these games and get better next week. Hopefully keep rolling next weekend."

Junior Defenseman Boston Buckberger
On Jake Fisher scoring early in the first period: "Yeah, that boosted us for sure. This building is loud, and when they score and get the first one it's not easy to come back because they have this fan volume, so much energy. So for "Fish" (Jake Fisher) to get that first one, it was huge for us to get it going. I think we just kept rolling off of that. We knew that we weren't going to put up 7 or 8, but we knew it was going to be a tight game but we knew that more would come so it was good."

On regrouping after Garrett Brown's injury: "I think obviously it was tough, When something like that happens it's quiet on the ice, you saw that. In the room there wasn't much talk, and we were just saying that we were going to do it for him because he's our guy, and we hope he's getting healthy whenever [that] is. It was great to see him after the game, and for us to win it for him is amazing."

On the development of goalie Quentin Miller: "He's doing real good, just a rock back there and the foundation of our team. Just knowing that we have a guy back there that can bail us out when we need—but these couple big saves on short breaks, or 2-on-1s, slot shots, whatever it may be. He does such a great job being the rock for our team, and we know we can build momentum off of him and segway it into our own zone and optimally capitalize on chances, so it's awesome."
