DENVER -- The University of Denver women's basketball team defeated the Regis Rangers, 67-40, on Friday night in Hamilton Gymnasium.
The Pioneers had three players with double digit scoring:
Coryn Watts, 20,
Laia Monclova, 14, and
Lexi Pletschette, 11.
Ana Conde added five points and nine rebounds and both
Brooke Murrell and
Jocelyn Medina notched a pair of blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Denver jumped out early as Monclova opened the scoring with a 3-pointer at 9:47 of the first quarter. Both teams struggled to find rhythm in the opening minutes, but the Pioneers hit four 3-pointers on 10 attempts to take a 20–8 lead after the first period.
Offense slowed for both teams to start the second quarter. Denver went 1-for-5 from behind the arc in the period, but Monclova continued to pace the Pioneers. She finished the half with 11 points, four rebounds and three steals as Denver took a 34–23 advantage into halftime.
Watts opened the second half with an and-one, sparking an 11–2 Denver run as the Pioneers held Regis scoreless for nearly four minutes. Watts scored six points during the stretch, and Monclova tied her career high with her fifth steal. Denver led 51–35 after three quarters.
The Pioneers continued their defensive pressure in the fourth, keeping Regis off the board for more than three minutes. Pletschette hit her first points as a Pioneer on a 3-pointer at the six-minute mark, later going 3-for-4 from deep in a five-minute span to reach 11 points. Denver closed out a 67–40 win.
