Box Score EL PASO, Texas -- The University of Denver women's basketball team fell to UTEP, 52-69, on Saturday afternoon in Texas.
Coryn Watts led the Pioneer offense with 19 points, 5 rebounds and three steals in 39 minutes of play.
Brooke Murrell added 10 points and grabbed eight boards.
Laia Monclova tacked on nine points and seven rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UTEP opened the game on a 13–0 run, holding Denver scoreless for nearly six minutes before Watts hit a 3-pointer at the 3:57 mark. The Miners briefly went scoreless for more than two minutes, allowing the Pioneers to cut the deficit to seven, but UTEP maintained control and took a 19–9 lead into the second quarter.
Both teams struggled to start the second, going nearly four minutes without a point. Denver held UTEP to a nearly five-minute field goal drought and Denver followed with a two minute scoring drought of their own, and the Miners stretched their lead to 30–17 at halftime.
Monclova opened the quarter with a 3-pointer, but UTEP immediately answered to preserve its 13-point margin. Tori Baker converted an and-one at the 2:20 mark to pull Denver within 10 to jumpstart a 10–0 DU run to cut the deficit to 43–36 before the Miners retook control and took a 45–38 lead into the fourth.
Quick fouls and turnovers by Denver early in the period allowed UTEP to push its lead back to nine. The Miners seized full control with a 9–0 run that stretched the margin to 64–47 with 3:25 remaining. Watts added a late jumper, but Denver couldn't rally and fell 69–52.
