LAWRENCE, Kansas -- The University of Denver women's basketball team dropped its matchup with the Kansas Jayhawks, 77-38, on Sunday afternoon in Lawrence, Kansas.
Tori Baker led the Pioneers' offense with 10 points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
Coryn Watts added eight points and three assists.
Ana Conde led the rebounding effort with six boards while
Lily Esparza and
Laila McLeod each added four.
The Pioneers hung close early, trailing just 6-5 after Murrell's 3-pointer at the 5:45 mark of the first quarter. Kansas answered with a three of their own, and Denver trailed 11-8 after one.
Baker's 3-pointer tied the game at 11 to open the second quarter, but Denver's offense struggled from there. The Pioneers committed multiple turnovers and went scoreless for nearly three minutes as Kansas built a 22-11 lead at the midpoint of the quarter. McLeod ended the drought with a 3-pointer at 2:41, but Denver entered the locker room down 30-16 at halftime.
The Pioneers, who went scoreless for more than four minutes in the third quarter while Kansas extended its lead to 42-18. Conde finally broke the drought with a 3-pointer at 2:39, but Denver carried a 55-23 deficit into the fourth quarter.
Denver's offensive struggles continued in the final period as the Kansas defense held the Pioneers to single digits in the quarter. The Pioneers fought to the end but fell to the Jayhawks, 77-38.
