DENVER – Freshman goaltender
Quentin Miller recorded his third shutout of the season on Friday night in the No. 6 Denver Pioneers hockey team's 4-0 victory against the No. 19 Miami RedHawks at Magness Arena.
DU (10-5-1, 6-1-0 NCHC) has not lost in regulation in now 10 straight contests and improved to 17-0-1 in the last 18 matchups against Miami (10-5-0, 2-5-0 NCHC). The teams conclude their season series on Saturday night, which features a new start time of 7 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast on Altitude Sports and on NCHC.tv.
Miller stopped all 22 shots he faced while making his 13th consecutive start, and he received offensive help from four different Pioneers. Senior
Rieger Lorenz, junior defensemen
Eric Pohlkamp and
Garrett Brown and freshman
Kyle Chyzowski all tallied in the win.
"I just thought we were really consistent throughout the whole game,"
Pohlkamp said. "I don't think we really gave them much tonight. This year we've had really good one games. We haven't really closed out the series, so hopefully tomorrow night we can come out flying."
Junior forward
Sam Harris had an assist in the contest to stretch his season-long point streak to seven games (3g/5a).
Denver netted goals in the first four minutes of both the first and second periods. Lorenz scored the game-winner at 3:56 of the first after intercepting a Miami clearing attempt, and Brown tallied his first marker of the year off a one-timer from a pass by
Jake Fisher at 3:49 of the middle frame.
The Pios recorded three goals in total during the second stanza, with Chyzowski burying his second tally of the year from a cross feed by fellow rookie forward
Kristian Eppeson at 15:29, and Pohlkamp going top-shelf with a wrist shot during a power play with 17 seconds left before the intermission.
Pohlkamp, the reigning national defender of the month of November, now has eight goals in his past nine outings and his 12 markers on the campaign are a career best for a season. He scored 11 goals as both a freshman in 2023-24 at Bemidji State and as a sophomore in 2024-25 at DU.
Denver outshot Miami 42-22 overall, marking its eighth game of the season where it has fired 40 or more shots on goal. RedHawks goalie Matteo Drobec finished with 38 saves, including stopping 18 shots in the second period.
The Pios went 1-for-5 on the power play while MU didn't capitalize on its two man-advantage chances.
UP NEXT: Denver wraps up a three-game homestay on Saturday against Miami on Saturday at 7 p.m. MT. The Pioneers then travel to St. Cloud State next weekend for their final contests before going on the Holiday Break.

QUOTABLES
Junior Defenseman Eric Pohlkamp
On the offense: "I think our power play's been struggling all year, and lucky enough, we got one there. It's nice to get a power-play goal. I was really happy with our compete tonight. Pucks to the net, and our breakouts were good tonight, so hopefully we can do it tomorrow."
On goaltender Quentin Miller: "I think he's been improving every game. Right when he got in, he didn't like to play the puck, but he's been awesome at playing the puck. He's a stud back there, and we're super fortunate to have him back there, and can't wait to see what he does more."
Junior Defenseman Garrett Brown
On his first goal of the season: "It was a great play by my teammates. Fish (
Jake Fisher) and Hagen [Burrows], they were working the puck down low, and it just got into an open area. Fish made a play and hit me and, I was able to get enough of it."
On the second period: "We just came out with a lot of energy. We were super vocal on the bench. Would like to keep it up in the third and obviously keep it going into tomorrow, but coming out for the second, we were super loud. Guys were cheering each other on the bench, and that energy flowed into the game."
On what he liked most from the team: "I think we were holding onto pucks. I thought we were committed to our game, getting to the blue line, putting in pucks behind them, making them turn. Just really committing to our style and playing a simple game that works teams down. So I thought that was nice."
