DENVER -- The University of Denver women's basketball team defeated the Metro State Roadrunners, 92-68, on Tuesday afternoon in Hamilton Gymnasium.
Four Pioneers recorded double-digit points,
Coryn Watts,
Brooke Murrell,
Laila McLeod and
Laia Monclova. Watts earned a career-best 30 points and McLeod tacked on a career-high 18. Murrell earned the second double-double of her career with 10 points and a career-best 15 rebounds.
Denver recorded 45 points off the bench and 15 points in transition.
After trailing for much of the first quarter, the Pioneers found their rhythm with back-to-back three-pointers from Baker and McLeod, taking a 15-14 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Tori Baker's backdoor cut led to another basket, giving DU a 20-16 advantage at the end of the first.
The second quarter saw a balanced offensive effort from the Pioneers, with McLeod contributing significantly through two quick assists, a jumper, and a rebound. Watts ignited a 10-0 run to finish the quarter, scoring back-to-back threes and a fast break layup to extend DU's lead to 49-32.
Watts continued to shine in the third quarter, opening with a three-pointer at the 9:45 mark that pushed the Pioneers' lead to 20 points. DU maintained strong defense, holding the Roadrunners scoreless for nearly two minutes leading into the media timeout. With the team shooting an impressive 71.4% from beyond the arc (5-for-7), Watts capped the quarter with a layup,en-route to setting a new career-high scoring record. Despite a late 10-0 run from Metro State, Denver led 74-53 heading into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, DU faced a series of early fouls but maintained a comfortable 20-point lead to earn the 92-68 victory.
