Denver Falls to Oral Roberts

TULSA, OK - -The Denver women's basketball team took an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell, 68-67, to the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles on the road Saturday.

The Pioneers (8-14, 1-8) had three players score in double figures, led by Jordan Jones, who had 15 points. Angelina Robles tacked on 13 points and two steals and Brooke Murrell chipped in as well with her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Denver took advantage of fantastic ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 15 assists on 28 made field goals. Individually, Emma Smith was on top of the distribution list for the Pioneers with nine assists.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 9-3 advantage, Denver went on a 6-0 run with 5:20 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Jones, to increase its lead to 15-3. The Pioneers then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 25-12 advantage. Denver did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 16 of its 25 points close to the basket.

The Pioneers maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 33-24 edge. Denver dominated in the paint, scoring six of its eight points close to the basket.

Denver continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Smith, to expand its lead further to 45-30 with 7:16 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Golden Eagles had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Pioneers still entered the fourth quarter with a 55-44 edge. Denver played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 22 points in the paint.

Oral Roberts then erased the Denver lead in the game's final quarter for a 68-67 comeback victory. Denver took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
