Denver Comes Up Short Against Omaha in Overtime

OMAHA, NE -- The Denver women's basketball team fell to the Omaha Mavericks 80-77 in overtime on the road Saturday.

The Pioneers (8-17, 1-11) had four players score in double figures, led by Coryn Watts, who had 20 points. Angelina Robles tacked on 16 points and four assists and Jordan Jones helped out with 15 points and five assists.

The Denver offense was very productive from deep, pouring in 10 threes on 27 attempts. Watts was the most prolific shooter for the Pioneers, draining four treys in the contest.

Denver forced 18 Omaha turnovers while committing 15 themselves in Saturday's game. The Pioneers turned those takeaways into 17 points on the other end of the floor. Emma Smith led the way individually with two steals.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 14-10 advantage, Denver went on a 6-0 run with 4:56 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Watts, to increase its lead to 20-10. The Pioneers then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 22-12 advantage. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 22 points.

Denver kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 9:34 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Laia Monclova, to increase its lead to 28-12. The Mavericks cut into that lead, but the Pioneers still enjoyed a 36-35 advantage heading into halftime. Denver was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 14 points.

Denver surrendered its halftime lead until, with the game tied at 48-48 they went on a 9-0 run to grab a 57-48 lead with 2:18 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Mavericks had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Pioneers still entered the fourth quarter with a 59-55 edge. Denver played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 23 points in the paint.

Denver started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Smith's three, to grow the lead to 66-55 with 7:43 to go in the fourth. The Mavericks then fought back to even things up at 72-72 and send the game to overtime. Denver got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring six of its 13 total points.

Omaha then edged ahead in overtime, leaving Denver behind 80-77 at the final buzzer.
