[13/12] Denver Heads to [3/4] Cornell Saturday Morning

The Pioneers return the trip to the Big Red this weekend after their 17-16 come-from-behind win last year at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium

DENVER – The [13/12] University of Denver men's lacrosse program leaves the state of Colorado for the first time in 2025 this weekend when the Pioneers head to [3/4] Cornell for a top-15 match-up at Schoellkopf field in Ithaca. The game will faceoff at 11 a.m. ET/9 a.m. MT on ESPN+.
 
DI SERIES HISTORY:
Cornell holds a 2-1 edge in the series. Saturday's meeting will be the first between the two programs in Ithaca. The Pioneers used a 5-2 third quarter to come-from-behind to beat Cornell 17-16 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium last February. The first two meetings came at neutral sites in Dallas (2008) and on Long Island (2012). FULL HISTORY
 
LAST TIME OUT:
Cody Malawsky had a career-high seven points to lead the Pioneers from 3-0 down to a 10-8 win over [RV/RV] Utah last Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Freshman goalie Grayson Manning came off the bench for the final 58:01, making 16 saves on 21 shots on goal to earn his first career victory. FULL RECAP

  • Denver is 4-0 in its Division I era on February 22.
  • In the early stages of DU's National Championship campaign, senior goalie Ryan LaPlante made 19 saves and allowed just five goals in a 10-5 neutral site win over Furman in Air Force's indoor football facility on Feb. 22, 2015.
  • LaPlante's 19 saves are tied for the third most in DU's DI era, and have only been bested since by Jack Thompson's 20 on April 28, 2021.
 
DENVER AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
  • Denver is 78-91 in its DI history against teams in the USILA Top-20.
  • Denver is 32-26 at home against ranked opponents.
  • Denver's 2024 overtime win at Johns Hopkins and its March 20, 2022 win at No. 7 Ohio State are the program's two top-10 road wins since a trip to Notre Dame in 2020, the final game before the COVID-19 shutdown.
  • Denver is 8-20 in its DI history against teams ranked in the top-3 in the country
  • Denver's last win over a top-3 team in the country came on March 12, 2017, an 11-10 win over No. 1 Notre Dame at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
  • The Pioneers last win over a top-3 team in the country in a true road game came on March 13, 2016, a 9-8 overtime win over No. 1 Notre Dame.
 
MALAWSKY'S CAREER DAY IN THE SNOW
  • In a 10-8 win over [RV] Utah in blizzard conditions at Peter Barton, redshirt-sophomore Cody Malawsky had 5 goals and 2 assists (7p), career-highs in both categories. 
  • Most points in a game by a Pio since Stephen Avery had 7 vs. Cornell on Feb. 24, 2024 at Barton.
  • Most goals in a game by a Pio since 3/19/23 against Ohio State.
  • The 7 points tied for the 12th-best offensive performance in the PBLS history. 
 
GRAYSON MANNING CLUTCH OFF BENCH IN UTAH WIN
  • Having played just nine minutes vs. Air Force in his career, freshman Grayson Manning came on for the final 58:01 with Denver down 3-0 in a 10-8 win over Utah on February 15.
  • Manning made 16 saves against just five goals allowed in his first career win.
  • The 16 saves were Denver's most since Jack Thompson stopped 17 shots against Georgetown on April 2, 2022.
  • Manning was the No. 65 rated recruit by Inside Lacrosse in the publications Power 100 Incoming Freshman preseason rankings.
 
RESET!
  • 2021: Denver's most goals off resets in a single season came in 2021, when the Pioneers scored 42 (92 chances) goals off resets, compared to its opponents 17.
  • 2022: The Crimson and Gold had a 23-18 edge in goals off resets.
  • 2023: Goals off resets in Denver games in Bill Tierney's final season saw Denver hold an 18-8 advantage.
  • 2024: Denver held a 24-11 advantage in goals off resets last season, including 18-6 in games the Pioneers went on to win.
  • 2025: Goals off resets between Denver and its opponents are tied at 5-5 this season.
  • Denver's defense has forced six shot clock violations this year compared to its opponents four.
 
UP NEXT:
The Pioneers return to Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium for two games next weekend. DU begins the weekend with a Friday night clash with Marist at 6 p.m. MT. Denver will close out the weekend against Quinnipiac on Sunday at 12 p.m. MT. Both games will be broadcast on Midco Sports Plus and 104.3 the Fan HD3.
