Denver Falls to St. Thomas

DENVER, CO -- Jordan Jones scored 22 points and Angelina Robles added 20, but the Denver women's basketball team fell to the St. Thomas Tommies, 81-68, at home Saturday.

The Pioneers (8-16, 1-10) had two players score in double figures, led by Jones, who had 22 points and six rebounds. Robles tacked on 20 points and two steals and Emma Smith added nine points and three steals.

Denver forced 16 St. Thomas turnovers while committing just nine themselves in Saturday's game. The Pioneers turned those takeaways into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Smith's three steals led the way for Denver.

How It Happened

After falling behind 11-7, Denver went on a 6-0 run with 3:49 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Lily Esparza, to take a 13-11 lead. The Pioneers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-16 advantage. Denver capitalized on six St. Thomas turnovers in the period, turning them into 12 points on the other end of the floor.

The Pioneers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 40-33.

Denver's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Pioneers faced a 59-49 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Denver took advantage of five St. Thomas turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.

Denver could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 81-68. Denver took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 19 points in the paint.
