VERMILLION, SD --The Denver women's basketball team fought back from a 50-46 deficit after the third quarter to defeat the South Dakota Coyotes 63-60 on the road, Saturday.
The Pioneers (9-20, 2-14) had two players score in double figures, led by Jordan Jones, who had 26 points and seven rebounds. Angelina Robles tacked on 11 points and Emma Smith added six points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Denver collected 31 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to South Dakota's 29, led by seven boards from Coryn Watts.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-6, Denver went on a 9-0 run with 5:35 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Jones, to take a 15-10 lead. The Pioneers then added five points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 23-13 advantage. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 23 points.
Denver kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 7:38 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Mary Wilson, to increase its lead to 31-19. The Coyotes cut into that lead, but the Pioneers still enjoyed a 35-33 advantage heading into halftime. Denver was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 12 points.
Denver then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Coyotes 50-46 entering the fourth. Denver's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled five of the team's 11 third-quarter points.
Denver narrowed its deficit to 58-55 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Jones' jumper, to seize a 60-58 lead with 1:04 to go in the contest. The Pioneers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 63-60 win. Denver took advantage of three South Dakota turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
