DENVER – The Denver Pioneers hockey team is ranked No. 6 nationally in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey/The Rink Live polls that were both released on Monday.
The Pioneers won both games against then-No. 20/RV Colorado College last week, winning 4-1 at home on Friday and 4-3 on Saturday at Colorado Springs to wrap up the regular season. DU will play CC again this weekend in a best-of-three series in the NCHC Quarterfinals at Magness Arena.
Denver moved up one spot in the polls after being at No. 7 in each last week. Michigan State stayed at No. 2 while Western Michigan moved up to No. 3. Minnesota dropped to No. 5 in the USCHO.com poll and No. 4 in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live list after losing at home in the Big Ten Quarterfinals to Notre Dame, while Maine comes in ranked No. 4 and 5, respectively, in each of those rankings.
Providence, which was previously at No. 6, dropped to No. 7 and No. 8 in the polls.
The Pioneers are presently at No. 9 in the Pairwise computer rankings that determine the NCAA Tournament field.
The NCHC is tied with the second-most teams ranked in the USCHO.com poll with five and has four teams in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live list. After Western Michigan at No. 3/3 and DU at No. 6/6 is Arizona State at No. 12/13, North Dakota at No. 17/18 and Omaha at No. 20/RV. Colorado College also received votes in the USCHO.com poll.
UP NEXT: Denver begins a best-of-three series in the NCHC Quarterfinals against Colorado College on Friday at 7 p.m. MT at Magness Arena. Game 2 is Saturday at 6 p.m. and if necessary, a Game 3 on Sunday will be at the same time.
