DENVER – The University of Denver women's tennis team (5-7, 2-0 Summit) earned its fourth consecutive win and its second in Summit League play with a 6-1 victory over Omaha at Denver Tennis Park on Sunday morning.
Doubles:
DU's doubles squad continued to roll, winning the point for the fifth straight dual. Leading the way was a bagel for junior
Hana Becirovic Novak and freshman
Natalie Cinkova, the third consecutive win for DU's No. 3 team and each with two fewer games lost than the previous match.
Senior
Andrea Burguete Beltran and junior
Marley Lambert matched their first score of the weekend to clinch the point for DU with a 6-3 victory on the top court. They did so after falling behind, 0-3, early before winning five games in a row to seal it.
In the day's only unfinished match, DU's No. 2 doubles team of juniors
Claudia Martinez de Velasco and
Louise Wikander were all level at 5-5 after fighting back from a break down to have match points on their opponents' serve.
Singles:
Becirovic Novak wrapped up her No. 5 singles match quickly, losing just one game in each set to extend her singles win streak to five – all coming in straight sets. Both sets followed similar patterns with the Denver junior breaking early and then winning the final four and five games, respectively.
Her doubles partner Cinkova put Denver up, 3-0, overall with her fourth straight win that also featured a bagel set. As she did in the weekend's first match against Kansas City, she started with a 6-0 first set. She exchanged breaks to start the second set before the core of the set stayed on serve until Cinkova broke for a 5-4 lead and successfully served it out from there.
UNO prevented the sweep at No. 4 singles, but Martinez de Velasco secured the DU win a few minutes later on Court 3 with her fifth win in a row and her second in straight sets. The first set featured a quick break for the Denver junior followed by wins in the final four games to take it, 6-1. She faced a break deficit to begin the second set but answered a 0-3 hole with her own three-game win streak to level it at 3-3, and she grabbed her own break lead late to close it out.
Wikander matched her doubles partner's singles scoreline, 6-1 6-4, for Denver's fifth point. She jumped out to a big 4-0 lead to open the match and closed the first set with wins in the final two games as well. She took a similar 4-1 lead in the second set but gave back one of her breaks midway through. With things tightening up late, she locked back in and found holds when needed to grab the win.
The top singles match was the final to finish out on the day but ultimately saw Burguete Beltran come away with the win in two sets. The match's first break went the way of the Denver senior in the fifth game, giving her a lead she would not give up the rest of the set. In the final game, she broke again and this time at love to capture a 6-3 win. The fifth game of the second set also saw a break, this time for UNO's Zoe Adkins. Burguete Beltran broke immediately back but then surrendered her serve once again to go down 3-4. With Adkins serving for the set at 5-4, the Pioner broke on the deuce point. She followed it up with a hold at love to go up, 6-5, and then broke once more in what would be the final game.
