[RV/-] Denver Heads to St. John’s for BIG EAST Clash Saturday

The Pioneers look for first BIG EAST win of the year in conference road opener

DENVER – The [RV/-] University of Denver men's lacrosse program heads back to the east coast this weekend to take on St. John's in the Pioneers BIG EAST road opener on Saturday at Belson Stadium.  
 
DI SERIES HISTORY:
Denver is 11-0 all-time in the series, including 5-0 in Queens. The Pioneers won 12-10 in their last trip to NYC. SERIES HISTORY
 
LAST TIME OUT:
Denver scored twice in the final 3:26 of regulation to send the BIG EAST opener to overtime, but Villanova came out on top in the extra session by a score of 10-9 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium last Saturday. FULL RECAP
 
ON THIS DATE
  • Denver is 3-1 in its Division I era on April 5, including last season's 18-8 win over St. John's.
  • In the second to last year of the GWLL, Denver came from 6-1 down to beat eighth-ranked Notre Dame 9-8 at Toyota Park outside of Chicago. Jamie Lincoln led the Denver offense with a hat trick and the game-tying goal.
 
KELLY'S HOT START TO THE SEASON
  • Through the opening 10 games of the 2025 season, senior midfielder Mic Kelly has scored a team-high 24 goals.
  • The only other Pioneer midfielder to score 18+ goals in the first seven games of the season came in 2013 when then-sophomore Wes Berg came out of the box to score 20 in his first seven games.
  • Nationally, Kelly has the third-highest goals per game in the country by midfielders, at 2.40 goals/game.
  • In 2020, midfielder Jack Hannah scored 17 goals through the first six games before COVID put an end to the 2020 campaign.
  • Kelly has a joint team-high five man-up goals this season, ranking fourth in the country in the category.
CALDWELL ON THE GROUND
  • Through the first 10 games of his redshirt sophomore campaign, Chris Caldwell has picked up 33 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers.
  • The 33 GBs is a team-high outside of primary faceoff taker Michael Kraus.
  • Caldwell ranks 22nd in the country in GBs/Game (3.30) among defenders, LSMs and SSDMs.
  • Caldwell is 15 ground balls away from cracking the single-season top-10 in program history for GBs among one of the three defensive field positions.
  • Caldwell has 5+ GBs in four different games this season.  
 
BONUS LACROSSE
  • Denver is 20-17 in overtime in its Division I history, including 15-10 since Matt Brown became a full-time member of the staff in 2008.
  • DU is 9-3 in its last 12 overtime games.
  • Denver dropped its overtime game to Villanova on March 29 by a count of 10-9. 
 
DOUBLE DIGIT GOALS
  • Denver has scored double-digit goals 218 times since Matt Brown joined the staff full time in 2008. Denver is 183-35 in those games.
 
ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY
  • The 2025 Denver Pioneers have players from 14 different states.
  • Since turning Division I ahead of the 1999 season, the Pioneers have had players from 35 different states.

  • Denver's DI student-athletes also cover three provinces of Canada: Alberta (2), B.C. (16) and Ontario (16).
 
UP NEXT:
Denver will head back to the east coast next week as well to take on Georgetown in their first of two back-to-back nationally televised games for the Pioneers. DU will take on nationally ranked Georgetown next Saturday at 1 p.m. MT on CBS Sports Network.
