VILLANOVA, Penn. – The University of Denver women's lacrosse team secured its fifth consecutive Big East title, defeating the Villanova Wildcats, 14-9, on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Villanova started the scoring early with a goal less than a minute into the first quarter.
Ryan Dineen responded for the Pioneers to tie it up at 7:29. Both teams tallied another goal in the first frame to end the quarter tied 2-2.
Denver picked up its offensive momentum in the second quarter.
Olivia Ripple led the charge for the Pioneers with three goals alongside a pair by
Raegan Wilson. Dineen tallied her second of the day at 6:43 and Thomsen-Marr added one of her own to give DU a 10-3 lead at the half.
The Pioneers and the Wildcats battled back and forth in the third, starting with a pair of goals by Dineen and
Caroline Keil. Villanova then responded with three of their own to cut the Denver lead to 12-9. Wilson got her second of the day off a free position opportunity to give DU a 13-6 lead with one quarter remaining.
Villanova battled back with a trio of goals in the fourth quarter but
Emelia Bohi's four saves clinched the 14-9 win for the Pioneers.
KEY PERFORMANCES:
Ripple led the offense with four goals while Wilson recorded a six-point day with three goals and three assists. Dineen earned a hat trick and
Lauren Black added a pair of goals.
Alex Dorr earned five wins in the draw circle while
Sarah Pokorny added three and
Carly Frohnapfel contributed a pair.
Bohi made eight saves between the pipes.
Megan Morneau,
Megan Klingenberg and
Kyra Obert each recorded a pair of caused turnovers and Klingenberg also contributed four ground balls.
