Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of Denver volleyball team fell to the No. 21 USC Trojans in straight sets (26-28, 16-25, 20-25) on Friday night in California.
The loss dropped the Pioneers to 0-1 to start the season.
Genevieve Lewis paced the offense with 10 kills and a .320 hitting percentage. Defensively,
Emma Mirabelli and
Alayna Finucan combined for 23 digs.
Kate Perryman and
Izabela Molina each added a pair of blocks.
Game Notes
- Izzy Rawlings recorded a team-high three aces in the loss.
- Molina and Alicia Thibodeau each earned their first career kills.
- Lewis added a team-high 10.5 points on 10 kills, one block and two digs.
How It Happened
SET 1
After early errors by both squads, the Pios made a 3-0 run to take the lead at 6-5. Denver held the lead by as many as three points before USC tied it up at 12. After a back-and-forth battle, USC took the lead at 17-16. Denver tied it up at 24 with a 3-0 run, but USC took set 1, 28-26, with a late run of their own.
SET 2
Denver took an early 5-2 lead after three straight kills from
Genevieve Lewis. USC responded to tie it up, 6-6. The Trojans build momentum with a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 9-6. Denver cut the lead to one at 13-14, but were unable to overcome the deficit and dropped the second set, 16-25.
SET 3
USC completed the sweep with a third-set win. The Pioneers and the Trojans traded points early before USC built a 7-3 lead. Denver battled back to tie the match at 12 but were unable to complete the comeback and fell, 20-25.
The Pioneers will take on Loyola Marymount tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. in California before returning to Hamilton Gymnasium for the home opener on September 4 vs. Memphis.
