Denver on Fire from Behind the Arc in Win Over Oral Roberts

DENVER -- The University of Denver women's basketball team shot 50% from three in its 86-74 win over Oral Roberts on Saturday afternoon in Hamilton Gymnasium.

Coryn Watts recorded her third 30-point game of the season with 31 points, eight three-pointers and six assists. Her eight treys are tied for the fourth-most in a single game in program history. Jocelyn Medina recorded the first double-double as a Pioneers with 16 points and 13 rebounds alongside seven assists and two steals. Tori Baker added 12 points and six assists and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Denver shook off a slow start, going scoreless over the first two minutes before Conde opened the scoring with a 3-pointer at the 7-minute mark of the first quarter. The Pioneers quickly found their rhythm, building a 10-6 lead behind a Monclova three and a Murrell basket. Watts connected from deep to maintain a narrow edge, and Denver closed the quarter on a 6-0 run, shooting 5-for-10 from 3-point range to take a 21-16 lead after one.

Watts stayed hot in the second quarter, knocking down her third 3-pointer of the game to push the lead to 28-18. Back-to-back triples from Baker and Medina extended the advantage to 36-24 before Oral Roberts answered with a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to six late in the half. Medina halted the momentum with a steal and an and-one conversion in the final minute, sending Denver into the break with a 42-35 lead.

Conde opened the third quarter with another 3-pointer at the 8:15 mark, but Oral Roberts quickly responded and tied the game at 46-46 midway through the period. The teams traded baskets in a back-and-forth stretch until Watts delivered a momentum-shifting four-point play, drilling a 3 while drawing a foul to give Denver a 57-53 edge heading into the final quarter.

The Pioneers carried that energy into the fourth, scoring back-to-back buckets to stretch the lead to 61-53. Watts buried another 3-pointer of the game to give Denver its largest lead to that point at 71-57 and force an Oral Roberts timeout. Denver continued to fend off the Golden Eagles down the stretch, and another Watts 3-pointer, her eighth of the game, pushed the lead to 15 with under two minutes remaining. Denver closed out the contest at the free-throw line to secure the 86-74 victory.

UP NEXT: The Pioneers are back on the road to take on NDSU on Thursday night in Grand Forks.
