DENVER – The Denver Pioneers hockey team is ranked No. 7 in the nation in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey's newest polls that were released on Monday.
Denver dropped one spot from No. 6 after going 0-1-1 at home against then-No. 15/18 Maine last week. The Pioneers lost their first game out of the holiday break by a 5-2 score on Friday before playing the Black Bears to a 3-3 tie on Saturday.
Michigan remains as the top team in the nation and is the unanimous choice on the USA Hockey list. Wisconsin dropped from No. 2 to No. 3 behind Michigan State after losing to Western Michigan in the Holiday Face-Off Championship early last week in Milwaukee.
The WMU Broncos jumped past the Pioneers to No. 6, and the two teams face-off in a top-10 showdown this weekend in Denver.
The NCHC has four teams ranked with all four in the top 10, joining the Big Ten as the only conferences to do that. Joining DU and Western Michigan (7/7) in the polls from the conference are North Dakota (4/4) and Minnesota Duluth (5/5). Arizona State, Miami and St. Cloud State earned votes in both polls while Colorado College was selected by a portion of the electorate in USCHO.com.
Hockey East has the most teams ranked with six and five teams respectively. The ECAC is tied with the NCHC and the Big Ten for second with four teams in the USCHO.com and tied with Hockey East for first in USA Hockey with five. The NCHC and Big Ten are tied for third for the most teams ranked in the USA Hockey poll.
UP NEXT: Denver wraps up its season-long four-game homestand on Friday at 7 p.m. MT and Saturday at 6 p.m. MT against No. 7 Western Michigan. Both games will be broadcast on Altitude 2 and NCHC.tv.
