DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball team opens the 2026-27 campaign on Monday, Nov. 2, traveling down to Colorado Springs to face Air Force at 6:30 p.m. MT inside Clune Arena.
The season opener marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Pioneers, who enter their first season in the West Coast Conference under returning head coach Erik Johnson.
Johnson begins his second stint at the helm of the Denver program after previously leading the Pioneers from 2008-12.
During his first four seasons in the Mile High City, Johnson compiled a 72-52 record, guiding Denver to four consecutive seasons at .500 or better. He returns to Denver following four seasons as an assistant coach at Fairfield, where he helped the Stags post a 102-27 record, capture three MAAC championships and make three NCAA Tournament appearances.
Denver looks to build on its 2025-26 campaign, which saw the Pioneers finish 11-19 overall and 5-11 in Summit League play. Senior guard Laia Monclova headlines Denver's returning group after averaging 9.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game last season while leading the team with 63 steals. The Pioneers also welcome a new coaching staff and several newcomers as they begin the transition to the WCC.
Monday's matchup marks the second consecutive season opener between Denver and Air Force. The Falcons claimed a 59-50 victory in last year's meeting at Hamilton Gymnasium. Denver holds a 17-6 advantage in the all-time series, with the Pioneers looking to snap a five-game losing streak against the Falcons.
The Pioneers will make their 2026-27 home debut on Wednesday, Nov. 4, hosting Lindenwood at 6 p.m. MT inside Hamilton Gymnasium.
