Davies upsets No. 3 seed in straight sets; Coats, Rovai join him in singles round of 32
PROVO, Utah – The University of Denver men's tennis team collected four total wins on what was its first day of play at the 2026 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, hosted by BYU, on Wednesday.
Juniors Theo Coats and No. 14-seeded Samuel Rovai joined sophomore Dylan Davies in the singles round of 32, each with wins to begin play on Wednesday – Davies doing so as an unseeded player with a straight-set victory over the tournament's No. 3 seed.
The day began with back-to-back rounds of doubles where the junior duo of Coats/Rovai registered DU's first match of the event, easily handling Northern Arizona's Mills/Tens, 8-3, to move into the round of 16. Denver's No. 9-seeded team of sophomores met the No. 8 seed in its second match of the day, falling by a single break, 6-8.
No. 7 seed of Davies and fellow sophomore Ander Tarrio Ponte dropped their opening match in the round of 32, 3-8, which marked Tarrio Ponte's first official NCAA appearance. He would go on to make his collegiate singles debut later in the afternoon but was unable to get the win.
Davies, Coats and Rovai all moved into the round of 32 in singles with their results on Wednesday afternoon, highlighted by Davies' upset over BYU's Tygen Goldammer. The DU sophomore, playing in just his second NCAA event and his first ITA Regionals, broke late for a 7-5 first-set win before closing out the match, 6-4, in the second.
Both DU juniors also earned singles results, Coats joining Davies with a straight-set win against Darrshan Surresh Kumar from Montana. Coats, who was a singles quarterfinalist at last year's ITA Mountain Regionals, began his 2026 campaign with only five total games lost in his first-round match.
No. 14 seed Rovai needed three sets but ultimately advanced over Air Force's Langdon Tingleaf. The two players traded 6-4 sets – Rovai winning the first before Tingleaf leveled things in the second – before the Pioneer reasserted control to seal the victory with a 6-2 final set.
Though the tournament began play on Tuesday, all four Pioneers saw their first action on Day 2 after receiving first-round byes in doubles and earning automatic selections into the singles main draw.
The 2026 ITA Mountain Regional Championships continues on Thursday with the doubles quarterfinals and the singles rounds of 32 and 16. Play is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. MT.
