Denver Men’s Tennis’ Davies Moves Into ITA Regional Semifinals

DU sophomore wins quarterfinal in straight sets, is one win away from NCAA berth
PROVO, Utah – University of Denver men's tennis player Dylan Davies advanced to the singles semifinals at the 2026 ITA Mountain Regional Championships, hosted by BYU, on Friday afternoon.
Davies, who is in just his second NCAA tournament, has won all four of his singles matches en route to the semifinals in straight sets. He was the only quarterfinalist to need just two sets to move into the semifinals, collecting a 6-4 6-2 victory over New Mexico's Alberto Perez.
In Davies' eight sets played so far this week, the sophomore has dropped more than four games in just one. Four of his sets have ended with him having dropped two or fewer games.
Davies becomes the first Pioneer to advance to the ITA Regional semifinals in singles since DU claimed both singles finals slots in 2024 (Daniel Sancho Arbizu and Raffaello Papajcik).
Should Davies win his semifinal match against Sep De Visser from Idaho State on Saturday, he will earn an automatic berth into the 2026 NCAA Men's Tennis Division I Singles Championship field.
Junior Theo Coats played in his second consecutive ITA Mountain Regional Championship quarterfinal as well, coming up against the No. 4 seed Xavier Calvelo from Utah State and falling in a tight three-set battle. He recovered from an early disappointment of dropping the first set after holding a 5-3 advantage, answering with a 6-4 win in the second set before ultimately falling in the deciding frame.
In each of Coats' ITA Regional quarterfinal appearances, he has forced third sets after dropping the opener.
Two more Pioneers got on court on Friday for added singles matches against players from Boise State. Junior Samuel Rovai lost only two games in a dominant 6-1 6-1 win over Michael Seversen. Sophomore Ander Tarrio Ponte split 6-3 sets against Stewart Aronson before falling in a match tiebreak, 7-10.
The 2026 ITA Mountain Regional Championships concludes on Saturday with the doubles final and the singles semifinals. The singles final will not be played with both semifinal winners having guaranteed themselves spots in the NCAA National Singles field. Play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. MT.
