DENVER – Denver Pioneers hockey freshman
Johnny Hicks has been named NCHC Goaltender of the Week, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced on Tuesday.
This honor marks the second time this season that Hicks has earned conference weekly distinctions and it's his first Goalie of the Week award. He was named NCHC Rookie of the Week on Feb. 3.
In the weekend sweep at Omaha, Hicks stopped 57-of-60 shots across the two-game series to remain unbeaten in his college career at 6-0-1. The freshman netminder combined to post a .950 save percentage and 1.52 goals-against average to backstop the Pioneers to their fifth sweep of the season and stretch the team's unbeaten streak to a season-long seven games.
On Friday, Hicks turned away 29-of-31 shots as the Pioneers achieved a 5-2 victory over the Mavericks. The next night, he made 26 saves—including all 13 in the third period—to lift Denver to a 3-1 win.
The Kamloops, British Columbia, native has appeared in 13 games this season and has played in seven straight contests while starting the last six outings. Hicks has posted a .962 save percentage and 1.04 goals-against average this season and his 6-0-1 record is the longest unbeaten stretch to begin a collegiate career by a Denver netminder since
Magnus Chrona went 7-0-1 in his first eight starts in 2019-20.
This is the fourth NCHC Goaltender of the Week accolade for the Pioneers this season, as
Quentin Miller previously was selected on Nov. 18, Dec. 9 and Dec. 16.
Western Michigan's Zaccharya Wisdom was named NCHC Forward of the Week, while Abram Wiebe of North Dakota was chosen as Defenseman of the week and Colorado College forward Connor Hvidston was selected as Rookie of the Week. Denver's
James Reeder was a finalist for this past week's forward award.
