No. 61 DU Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 11 Arizona State

Denver ends Arizona’s Red Blue Invite with 1-2 record following 0-4 loss to ASU

TUCSON, Arizona – The No. 61-ranked University of Denver women's tennis team (6-4, 0-0 Summit) ended the Red Blue Invite, hosted by Arizona, with a 0-4 loss to the No. 11-ranked Arizona State on Saturday afternoon.

For the second time in as many days, Denver came up against a national-ranked opponent and finished 1-1 across the two matches after upsetting No. 40-ranked host Arizona on Friday.

Doubles:
ASU got on the board first with a win in doubles off two 6-1 victories at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots. Once again, Denver's team of seniors Claudia Martinez de Velasco and Louise Wikander gave their opponents a fight in the No. 2 slot but were forced to settle for a 4-3 lead in an abandoned match.

Singles:
Arizona State used wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 6 singles to clinch the win. The Sundevils held set leads on the remaining three courts, though all were abandoned with the dual in hand. Wikander lead Denver's singles fight, giving ASU its toughest battle of the day in the No. 1 spot. An extended 7-5 was needed to separate the match's top two singles players with ASU's Emilija Tverjonaite – the nation's No. 16-ranked singles player – coming out on top. The match was left unfinished before either player could get on the board in the second set.

Sophomore Natálie Cinková and senior Hana Bečirovič Novak were midway through their second sets and down a break each but within striking distance at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, respectively, when ASU clinched the win.

Up Next:
