DENVER -- The University of Denver Pioneers dominated the Xavier Musketeers with a 19-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
Caroline Keil opened the scoring at 13:13 of the first quarter on a free position goal, tying the single-season program record. She would break it outright in the third quarter with her 19th free position goal of the season. Olivia Ripple buried her 50th goal of the season on a free position at the nine-minute mark to make it 2-0. Ripple finished with five goals on the day, including a sixth-goal "sock trick" in the fourth quarter off an assist from Rowan Lawrence.
Denver led 5-0 after the first quarter. Ryan Dineen added a woman-up goal and Bowers struck twice in the final minute of the period, the second coming on a 7-on-4 advantage.
The Pioneers erupted in the second quarter, outscoring Xavier 7-0 to take a 12-0 halftime lead. Bowers notched her first hat trick of the season during the surge, and Carly Frohnapfel found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career.
Denver continued to pour it on in the third quarter, with Dineen converting a free position goal and Keil capping the period with the record-breaking tally to push the lead to 15-0.
Keil completed a hat trick in the fourth quarter before Xavier got on the board at 12:47. Dineen added an assist on Keil's fifth goal of the game, and Wilmot closed out the scoring with a free position goal — her first of the season — for a 19-1 Pioneer victory.
KEY PERFORMANCES:
Olivia Ripple led the offense with six goals, and Ryan Dineen tacked on six points on three goals and three assists. Caroline Keil notched four goals, including a record-breaking 19th free position goal this season and Caroline Bowers added a hat trick and an assist.
The Pioneers had a balanced effort on the draw with Ripple recording five wins in the circle and Karleigh Mutch and Alex Dorr each added three.
Megan Klingenberg dominated defensively with three ground balls and three caused turnovers and Frohnapfel added a trio of ground balls alongside her first career goal.
The Denver goalie trio tallied eight saves: one by Lexi Gwaku, three by Chloe Silverstein and four by Lauren Hall.
NOTABLES:
The win marked the largest margin of victory by the Pioneers in a single game since the 20-1 victory over Old Dominion on March 30, 2019.
Caroline Keil broke the single-season free-position goal record set by Julia Gilbert in 2023, with her 19th free-position tally of the season.
