Denver Falls to West Virginia in Penultimate Non-Conference Tilt

The Pioneers will have 10 days off before returning home to take on Creighton on September 22
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The University of Denver men's soccer program fell to West Virginia 5-0 on Friday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
"It is always darkest before the dawn.," Jack and Sheila Weinberg Head Men's Soccer Coach Jamie Franks said. "We are playing high level opponents in tough venues where they have only a handful of losses over the past decade. It's a tough moment for our team but we believe that playing in these games will develop character, game intelligence and a collectiveness that prepares you for knockout games in November and December.
"It's a learning curve for this group. The outpouring of support from alumni to keep going, keep fighting and to keep learning is a reminder that other Denver teams have had tough times that hardened them for the future. We've had quality moments all season but need to manage the game more effectively with safety vs. risk. Denver Soccer is built on playing every play and we are dwelling too much on past plays. We need to show up with a better sense of our identity when adversity hits."
How it Happened:
9' Productive combination play down the Denver left led to the first shot on goal of the night. The Pioneers connected several passes that ultimately led to Bryce Willoughby setting up Erik Collins for a narrow-angled shot that was saved comfortably by Toby Mawer.
25' Off West Virginia's second corner of the night, the Mountaineers got three shots off. Alex Hohl saved the middle attempt surrounded by a pair of blocked shots by the Denver defense. DU cleared the danger out to Willoughby down the left channel.
41' Forcing arguably Hohl's biggest save of his early career with the Pioneers, Thomas Bowe used some footwork to get himself free before getting off his shot from inside the box. Hohl dove down low to his right to make the save.
54' West Virginia scored off its first corner of the second half with a back-post run that Lund got a head on, but WVU's Sammie Walker was the first to get to the header and tapped it in. Denver challenged the play for a foul on the service, but the ruling on the field was upheld.
55' The Mountaineers nearly had a second when a volley from Harry Hogben was steered toward the corner, but Hohl kept it out and sent it in behind for another WVU corner.
65' Walker looked to head his second of the night in, but he was flagged offside and confirmed off after video review.
68' Denver's best chance of the night fell to Willoughby's foot at the top of the box, but his right-footed effort was saved, and Keegan Kelly couldn't get his foot around the rebound.
75' With Denver pushing for a leveler, West Virginia hit the Pioneers on the counterattack. Isaac Scheer centered a ball from the left into Pablo Pozos, who slid it into the open net.
77' Juan Alvarez made it 3-0 off a feed from Pozos.
78' Pozos beat Hoh 1v1 off a back-heel flick from Isaac Scheer to extend the home side's lead to 4-0.
86' Pozos' played a role in his fourth goal of the night when he setup Brayden Macomber's tally to continue to add onto the Mountaineers lead.
"We get a much needed break as we prepare for conference play," Franks said. "I'm confident we will use the 11 days off to learn and grow. We've got some big time leaders and players in that locker room. I'm confident we will sort it out."
UP NEXT:
Denver will have an 11-day layoff before the Pioneers play their third home match of the season on September 22 when they host Creighton. Opening kickoff is set for 6 p.m. MT, and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+. The match is a two-for-one ticket Tuesday and a Crimson Out. Denver students can also take part in DU Student Taco night through halftime of the midweek clash.
