John Carney

John Carney will enter his first season as an assistant coach at Denver in 2026.

  • 2023 WCGA National Assistant Coach of the Year (with California)
  • Two-Time WCGA West Region Assistant Coach of the Year (2024 with California, 2013 with Oregon State)
  • 2023 USA Gymnastics Washington State Hall of Fame Inductee

Prior to Denver

University of California, Berkeley Assistant Coach (2022-25)

  • Helped lead the Bears to NCAA runner-up finish in 2024
  • Won consecutive regular-season conference titles in 2024 (Pac-12) and 2025 (ACC)
  • Saw six Cal gymnasts win a combined 23 regular-season and 22 postseason All-American honors
  • Served as interim head coach in May-June 2025

University of Missouri Assistant Coach (2013-22)

  • Helped oversee program's rise from not qualifying for NCAA Regionals in 2013 to a fifth-place finish at NCAA Nationals in 2022
  • Coached NCAA national runners-up on vault and beam in 2022
  • Saw five Tigers combine for nine regular-season and six postseason All-American honors

Oregon State Assistant Coach (2008-13)

  • Helped lead OSU to NCAA National Championships team appearance in 2010
  • Helped win Pac-10/12 conference titles in 2011 and 2013
  • Coached three gymnasts to podium finishes at 2011 NCAA National Championships
  • Coached Pac-10/12 conference bars champion in 2011 and 2013 (the program's first since 1996)
  • Saw 10 OSU gymnasts win a combined four regular-season (beginning in 2013) and 20 postseason All-American honors
