Tom Hogan

Tom Hogan

Tom Hogan, now in his seventh season as head coach in 2022, was named the seventh head coach in DU volleyball history in December 2015. In his first three seasons at the helm, he led the Pioneers to back-to-back-to-back Summit League regular season titles and NCAA Tournament berths. In 2018, he was named Summit League Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive season after the Pioneers finished 27-3, the best record in program history.

Hogan’s overall record as the head coach at DU is 133-36 and 81-14 in the Summit League.

Hogan’s wealth of coaching experience also includes an Olympic silver medal. He was a member of the coaching staff of the USA Women's National Volleyball Team from 2002-2008. During this time, Hogan helped the team win the silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the first time USA competed in the gold medal game since 1984.

DENVER PIONEERS
Hogan joined the Pioneers’ coaching staff as the first assistant in the summer of 2012 for head coach Jesse Mahoney and was named the associate head coach after the 2014 season. As the offensive coordinator, he helped DU achieve a national ranking of 20th in 2013 and 19th in 2014 based on offensive efficiencies of .266 and .266, respectively. As the recruiting coordinator, his 2014 recruiting class was ranked 28th by PrepVolleyball.com, the first top-30 recruiting class in program history.

In his first season as head coach – 2016 – Hogan led the Pioneers to its first win over a ranked opponent in five years as the Crimson and Gold defeated [20] Loyola Marymount in four sets during the Pioneer Classic. Denver finished the season in the top-50 in both offense and defensive efficiency in the NCAA, ending as the 23rd-best offense and 35th-best defense.

In the 2016 NCAA tournament, Denver lost to the eventual national champions, the Stanford Cardinals, in three sets to conclude the year with a 23-8 record, the second time in school history DU finished three straight seasons with at least 20 wins.

In 2017, the Pioneers won their fourth-straight Summit League regular season title, tournament title, and NCAA Tournament berth on the way to a 23-6 record. Hogan was named the 2017 Summit League Coach of the Year. Denver was awarded a three seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, and fell to Cal Poly in three sets.

The 2018 season brought even more success, the Crimson and Gold went on to win their fifth-consecutive Summit League Regular Season title and their first-ever at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. After winning his second Summit League Coach of the Year honor, Hogan and the Pioneers traveled to Provo, Utah for the first round of the NCAA's, ultimately falling to Utah in three sets. Denver wrapped up the year with a 27-3 mark, the best record in program history, including a perfect 15-0 in league matches.

Hogan led the 2019 Pioneer squad to their fifth Summit League title. Denver recorded an overall record of 23-9 while going 13-3 in the Summit League, finishing second in the regular season before clinching the tournament title with a 3-1 victory over Omaha in the championship match. The Pios earned their sixth consecutive NCAA appearance, as they traveled to Palo Alto, California before falling to the defending champion, Stanford Cardinal in the first round. The Pioneers landed their third all-time All-American selection in Lydia Bartalo and Hogan's first as head coach.

Hogan continued to set the standard in the spring of 2021, capturing his third Coach of the Year award from the league. The fifth-year coach continued to pile up historic numbers while leading the program, including posting the first undefeated road record in the regular season in program history in the spring of 2021 (8-0). Hogan’s team continued to show the high-level play this year that the program has grown accustomed to under his watch, with the team ranking at the top of the Summit League in aces per set (2.28, assists per set (12.54), hitting percentage (.267), kills per set (13.48), team services aces (114), which led to the selection of four First Team All-Summit League selections in Tina Boe, Brianna Green, Lydia Bartalo and Ellie Anderson.

The leader of the Pioneers had it going again for DU in the fall of 2021, guiding the team to a 23-6 record, their 10th straight winning season and 21st in program history. Hogan led the Pioneers to two Power-5 wins over USC and Iowa in the early portion of the year.

Denver continued to flourish under Hogan in year six, posting league-best numbers in Opponent Attack Percentage (.166), Opponent Assists (9.62), Opponent Kills (10.61), Opponent Service Aces (.99), Opponent Digs (11.92), Hitting Percentage (.263), Assists (12.67), and Aces (1.94). The Pioneers also ranked inside the NCAA top-40 in all the above statistical categories.

Denver posted a 19-12 mark on the year, with a 12-6 record in Summit League play despite Hogan having to miss almost all of the season due to illness in 2022. Nevertheless, Interim Head Coach Andrea Beaty helped guide the Pioneers into being the premier defensive team in the league, finishing in the top three in league in opponent hitting percentage (first, .164), opponent assists (first, 10.76), blocks per set (first, 2.66), and total blocks (second, 311.5).

Green highlighted the defensive front, finishing first in the league in blocks per set with a 1.41 average while Poulter finished first in the league in aces per set (.46) and second in assists per set (10.20).

Denver has been easily favored on its home court under Hogan, amassing an 117-21 record at Hamilton Gymnasium since 2012, including a 59-3 record from 2014-17 that featured 31-straight unbeaten matches from Sept. 19, 2014, to Sept. 3, 2016.
