DENVER (Oct. 1) - University of Denver men's soccer players Michael Piserchio (Littleton, Colo.) and Dag-Christian Olsen (Gjovik, Norway) each tallied hat tricks with three goals apiece to lead the Pioneers past Cal Poly 8-0 Sunday at Pioneer Field. Denver improves to 3-3 on the season while Cal Poly falls to 2-6-1.
Denver scored first just three minutes into the game (3:23) when Piserchio scored his first goal, firing a shot into the upper left corner of the net off an assist by Olsen. The Pioneers, who out-shot the visitors 20-12, scored two goals about three minutes apart when Olsen scored off an assist from Nat Borchers (Pueblo, Colo.) (11:30) and then Scott Dixon (Littleton, Colo.) bent a shot from 25 yards away that got around Cal Poly keeper Kurt Merli (13:44). Piserchio scored on a penalty kick with :55 second remaining in the half to give Denver a 4-0 half-time lead.
In the second half, Piserchio earned his third goal of the game (fifth of the season) on an assist from freshman Brian Kneuer (Littleton, Colo.) at 55:48. Freshman Chris Bennett (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored his first goal of his collegiate career with 61:55 to give Denver a commanding 6-0 advantage in the game. Olsen finished out the scoring with two goals just six minutes apart to end the game.
The Pioneers return to action on their home turf on Friday, October 6 at 3:30 vs. Call State-Sacramento at Pioneer Field.
