Box Score Box Score DENVER (Nov. 4) - Jeff Panzer and Bryan Lundbohm each had two goals and racked up seven points between them as eighth-ranked North Dakota defeated the University of Denver by a 7-4 count to earn a sweep of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series Nov. 4 at Magness Arena in Denver.
UND freshman Ryan Hale opened the scoring just 2 minutes, 43 seconds into the contest when he took a turnover in the Pioneer zone and beat Denver netminder Adam Berkhoel (Woodbury, Minn.) on his glove side. Panzer, Lundbohn and sophomore Ryan Bayda - whose line accounted for three goals in Friday's 5-2 win - connected again less than two minutes later when Panzer slipped the puck past Berkhoel's stick side when the Pioneers failed to clear the crease.
The Pioneers (1-5-0, 1-3-0 WCHA) got onto the board late in the first period when sophomore left wing Matt Weber (Binghamton, N.Y.) took a blue-line feed from freshman Ryan Caldwell (DeLoraine, Manitoba) with 34 seconds left in the period. It was Weber's second goal in as many nights, but the Sioux went into the locker room with the momentum when Panzer redirected a Sioux shot just before the first intermission.
The Pioneers came storming back in the second period, getting a blue-line slapper from Paradise that beat UND goaltender Karl Goehring high on the glove side as junior David Neale (Victoria, British Columbia) screened Goehring in front of the net. Sophomore Kevin Doell (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) then tied the score at 3-3 two minutes later with his team-leading third goal of the season when he tipped in a rebound past Goehring.
UND (5-2-3, 4-2-0 WCHA) scored the first of four unanswered goals with 11:25 to go in the second when Lundbohm got his ninth goal of the season on a low power-play slapshot past Berkhoel's stick side. The Sioux then got a break with 6:39 to go when the Pioneers' Greg Keith (Delta, British Columbia) was assessed a game misconduct that gave UND a 5-minute power play. North Dakota took advantage just 42 seconds into the major penalty when Lundbohm deflected a shot off a Pioneer defender that went over Berkhoel's left shoulder.
Sophomore Wade Dubielewicz (Invermere, British Columbia) then took over goaltending duties for the Pioneers and gave up third-period goals to Paul Murphy and Bayda to make it 7-3, and Paradise finished off the scoring with his second goal of the game with 2:19 left when he put in a rebound untouched in front of the goal.
"There's no question that this was a disappointing series," said head coach George Gwozdecky. "We were mentally ready to go tonight, but we made some unforced errors in our zone at the start of the game and gave a couple of easy goals. The team regrouped well in the locker room in the first intermission, and we felt we were still in the game going into the third period"
The Pioneers hit the road next weekend for a WCHA series at Minnesota State, Mankato on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 10-11.
