| DENVER - Behind 18 kills from Most Valuable Player Laura Tinetti, the University of San Francisco volleyball team defeated Denver in four games (10-15, 15-10, 15-5, 16-14) to win the 2000 Pioneer Classic at Hamilton Gymnasium on Saturday night. Both USF (5-1) and Denver (2-5) finished the tournament at 2-1, and the Lady Dons' head-to-head win against the Pioneers was the difference in the tournament title. Junior outside hitter Kellie Savage (Arvada, Colo. / Arvada West) led the Pioneers with 16 kills, while senior OH Sarah Kaye (Aurora, Colo. / Smoky Hill) had 14. Both were named to the Pioneer Classic all-tournament team, along with Tinetti, teammate April Scoggin, UMKC's Katie Keating and Carla Miali of Weber State. Overall, we had a much better weekend than last week, said Denver head coach Beth Kuwata. Our passing improved the most, and it was great for us to get our first two wins of the season. Our outsides pretty much carried the load for us again this weekend, and the thing we need to do is develop the rest of our offense so that when they have an off night like tonight, we have other options. WSU finished third despite a 3-2 (15-13, 10-15, 15-4, 7-15, 15-12) loss to UMKC in the night's third match. Julie Mohrfeld had a match-high 20 kills for the Kangaroos, who won their first match of the season (1-5) Erica Austin added 15 kills and 11 digs. Stephanie Metcalf had a double-double (13 kills, 10 digs) in a losing effort for the Wildcats (3-3). Earlier in the day, sophomore middle blocker Laurie Young (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fort Collins) had a career-high 10 blocks and Kaye pounded a season-high 20 kills to lead the Denver to a 3-0 (15-13, 16-14, 15-10) sweep of UMKC. Kaye also led the Pioneers with a season-best .340 efficiency mark for three games, and came within two kills of tying her career high. The Pioneers tallied a season-high 14 blocks on the afternoon. Sophomore RS Julie Crockett (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Doherty) added five blocks and nine digs while Savage pounded 16 kills and three blocks. In the morning's first match, Weber State swept San Francisco (15-10, 15-10, 15-9) to hand the Lady Dons their first loss of the season. Becky Montauge led three Wildcats in double-digit kills with 15, and Stephanie Metcalf had a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. Denver continues its 11-match homestand on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest with Drake. |
