Box Score
DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer team got goals from junior Nic Hartman (Littleton, Colo.) and senior Michael Piserchio (Littleton, Colo.) in the first half and held New Mexico scoreless in defeating the Lobos 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field. With the win, Denver improves to 8-4-3 overall, 2-2-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. New Mexico drops to 3-8-2, 0-3-1.
Denver grabbed a 1-0 lead following a New Mexico foul outside of the penalty box. Piserchio took the kick and passed it to teammate Mark Wellen (Littleton, Colo.) who shot it towards the Lobo goal. Hartman deflected the Wellen shot past Lobo goalkeeper Andrew Weber that gave Denver a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
Denver got its second goal just under seven minutes later when Piserchio took a free kick and blasted a shot that beat Weber that gave Denver a 2-0 advantage it would not relinquish.
New Mexico actually outshot the Pioneers by a 9-8 margin, but Denver goalkeeper Parker Jarvis (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) was on his game, stopping six New Mexico shots.
Denver now has won two straight games after losing a pair of conference games on the road last weekend in California. The Pioneers are unbeaten at home with a record of 6-0-1.
Denver is next in action Sunday, Oct. 28 when they travel down I-25 to play at Air Force at 1 p.m.
