COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Denver men's soccer team handed conference-leading Air Force its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation loss of the season Sunday, defeating the Falcons 1-0 in Air Force's final home game of the season. With the win, Denver improves to 9-4-3 overall, 3-2-0 in the MPSF. Air Force falls to 11-3-1, 4-1-0.
Denver senior Michael Piserchio (Littleton, Colo.) got the Pioneers on the scoreboard first in the 23rd minute when a crossing pass from teammate Nic Hartman (Littleton, Colo.) bounced through a couple players on both teams and ended up in front of Piserchio, who blasted a shot past Falcon goalkeeper Mike Brophy that gave Denver a 1-0 lead. Denver had another scoring chance come up empty just 10 minutes later as Hartman got free of the defense and had a wide open scoring chance in front of Brophy, but his shot sailed high over the crossbar, keeping Air Force in the game trailing 1-0.
After outscoring its last four opponents by a 17-4 margin, Air Force could not get the same production Sunday, as the Pioneers limited the Falcons to just four shots at Denver goalie Parker Jarvis (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.). Jarvis stopped all three Falcon shots directed towards him in the game. Air Force lost its leading scorer, Marcus Sagastume in the first half with an injury and he did not return.
Denver has now won three consecutive games after opening conference play with back-to-back losses.
The Pioneers are next in action this Friday, Nov. 2 when they take on MPSF foe Fresno State at 3 p.m. at Pioneer Field. It will be the final home game for five Denver seniors.
