SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The University of Denver men's soccer team earned its second road win of the season with a 1-0 win over UC Santa Barbara at Harder Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 6-2-3 on the season. UCSB falls to 4-3-2.
In a game with little offense, the Pioneers tallied just four shots on the afternoon to the Gauchos' 11. Neither team could find the net in the first half as UCSB had seven shots but none beat Denver keeper Parker Jarvis (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), who recorded five saves on the afternoon. The Gauchos also had five corner kicks in the first half and couldn't convert on any of them.
The Pioneers were the team to finally break through, as senior Rj Smith (Denver, Colo.) took a pass from teammate Michael Piserchio (Littleton, Colo.) in the 84th minute and beat Gaucho keeper Dan Kennedy for his first goal of the season that gave Denver a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers would make it stand as Jarvis kept the Gauchos from scoring in recording another shutout, raising his season total to three and a half.
The Pioneers are now unbeaten in their last six games (3-0-3) and enter conference play this week when they take on San Diego State Friday, Oct. 12 in San Diego.
