Denver Swimmers Put Up Strong Showing Against Wyoming

Nov. 10, 2001

The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving teams put their best effort on the line but fell short in an upset bid against Wyoming on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 10) at the El Pomar Natatorium. The men lost by a margin of 145-96, the women fell 164-78.

Swimming well for the men were senior Brian Keats (Toronto, Ontario) and juniors Juniors Chase Kelly (Littleton, Colo.) and Asaf Shachaf (Tel Aviv, Israel). Kelly paced the Pioneers with 13 points on the afternoon by winning the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.55) and finishing second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.04). Keats and Shachaf both contributed nine points to Denver's total with individual first-place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.13) and the 50-yard freestyle (21.66), respectively.

For the women, seniors Sarah Corcoran (Denver, Colo.) and Helen Rychecky (Littleton, Colo.) led the way. Corcoran earned 18 points with her first place finishes in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events (24.58, 53.46). Rychecky added 13 points by winning the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.18) and placing second behind Corcoran in the 50-yard freestlye (25.52).

"Everyone on the team swam extremely well," said Rychecky. "We swam faster today than we have in our previous two meets and are looking forward to improving next week. Even though the competition was tough, we kept our poise and were able to turn in personal-best times.

"I was very impressed with our performance today," said head coach Jim Bain. "Our swimmers put it all on the line and made the meet interesting in the later events. They deserve so much credit for their efforts, I am pleased with where this team is at this early in the season."

The Pioneers return to action next Friday (Nov. 16) when they host Colorado College in a dual meet at the El Pomar Natatorium. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
