DENVER - The Fresno State men's soccer team got a goal in the 77th minute and kept the University of Denver men's soccer team from scoring and earned a 1-0 win over the Pioneers Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field. The loss was Denver's first at home all season and drops the Pioneers' overall record to 9-5-3 on the season, 3-3-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Fresno State improves to 4-6-6, 1-3-2.
The Bulldogs had just three shots on goal the entire game, but they made their last one count as Ernie Vega recorded his first goal of the season off a pass from Scott Scigliano at the 76:56 mark that gave Fresno a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs held on from there and got their first win since a 6-0 victory over Western Kentucky on Sept. 23.
The Pioneers had a couple chances late in the game but couldn't convert. Senior Michael Piserchio (Littleton, Colo.) got a head on a crossing pass in the 78th minute that was saved by Bulldog goalkeeper Jeremy Proud that kept the game scoreless. The Pioneers had another chance just two minutes later but senior Scott Dixon's (Littleton, Colo.) header off a corner kick went wide.
Denver goalkeeper Parker Jarvis (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) had two saves on the afternoon and the Pioneers had four shots on goal to the Bulldogs two. Denver also held an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks but couldn't get a ball past Proud.
Denver closes out the regular season Sunday, Nov. 4 when they play at San Jose State at 2 p.m. It is the final game before the MPSF conference tournament begins next week on the campus of Fresno State.
