NEW ORLEANS - Ann MacMillan had 25 kills and led five Privateers with double-digit kill totals as the University of New Orleans defeated the University of Denver, 3-2 (27-30, 30-27, 20-30, 30-26, 15-10) in Sun Belt Conference action Friday night at UNO's Lakefront Arena. With the win, the Privateers improve to 8-16 and 3-9 in the SBC, while the Pioneers fall to 10-14 and 5-7.
Denver posted its best offensive match of the season, hitting a whopping .354 on the night, but New Orleans countered with a strong .314 outing. Freshman middle blocker Mary England (Castle Rock, Colo. / Chaparral HS) led the Pioneers with career-high totals of 18 kills and a .593 hitting percentage, and contributed nine digs. Sophomore middle blocker Olympia Hughes (Casper, Wyo. / Natrona County HS) added 14 kills on a .464 hitting efficiency, and added eight digs.
In addition to MacMillan's strong night, Jennifer Cruz had 24 kills for the Privateers.
"We won pretty much every aspect of the match statistically, except for the score," said head coach Beth Kuwata. "The team's confidence is down a little right now, and we're just struggling to get things done when it counts."
The Pioneers conclude their final league road trip of the season Saturday night with a 6 p.m. CST match at South Alabama.
