Denver Swimmers Compete at UCI Sprint Meet

The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the 2001 UCI Sprint Meet on Wednesday night at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Calif. The men and women swept dual meets against Cal Poly, but fell to UC Irvine, the women were also defeated by New Mexico State.

Denver swimmers posted a strong showing in the meet by finishing in the top five places in all 10 events. Leading the charge for the men was senior Brian Keats (Toronto, Ontario) who earned a first place finish in the 100-yard individual medley (54.15) and a second place finish in the 50-yard backstroke (24.36). Also swimming well for the men were junior Asaf Shachaf (Tel Aviv, Israel ) and sophomore Greg Dontchos (Littleton, Colo.). Shachaf placed second in the 50-yard breaststroke (27.24) and Dontchos finished second in the 50-yard butterfly (23.58).

For the women, senior Erin McConaughy (Englewood, Colo.) paced the way with her first place finish in the 100-yard individual medley (1:01.22) and her ninth place finish in the 50-yard backstroke (30.04). Senior Sarah Corcoran (Denver, Colo.) swam well and earned third place finishes in the 50-yard butterfly (27.19 ) and the 100-yard individual medley.

The Denver swimmers return home to host in-state rival Metro State in a dual meet this Saturday (Dec. 1) at 12 p.m. mountain time. Admission to the meet, which will be held at the El Pomar Natatorium on the Denver campus, is free.
