Denton, Texas - The University of Denver women's soccer team suffered only its second loss of the season Friday night when North Texas sophomore forward Marilyn Marin drilled her second goal of the night to lift the North Texas Lady Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Denver in a key Sun Belt Conference women's soccer game. The Lady Eagles (3-2, 1-0) cleared a huge hurdle in positioning themselves for a run at the Sun Belt's regular season title by upending the Pioneers (4-2, 0-1), who were picked second in the league's preseason poll of the head coaches.
Denver dominated in the first half, keeping the ball in their offensive end of the field. The Pioneers wound up with a 15-5 edge in shots and kept the pressure on the Lady Eagles by taking six corner kicks to North Texas' four. Denver struck first in the opening half when sophomore forward Mychael Movius (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) took a crossing pass from junior midfielder Kristin Warren (Littleton, Colo.) and headed it past North Texas goalkeeper Monica Housden at the 22:35 mark to notch her third goal of the season and give Denver a 1-0 advantage.
North Texas, which took just one shot in the opening half to Denver's eight, was unable to mount much of an offensive threat. The Lady Eagles took just one corner kick in the first half and Denver junior goalkeeper Erica Izard (Fort Collins, Colo.) was required to make just one save. With 2:50 into the second half North Texas evened the score when Marin gained control of the ball off a lead pass in the middle of the field and dribbled to within 10 yards before firing a rocket past Izard to knot the game, 1-1. Marin's game-winner, her third of the season, came at 80:43.
The Pioneers open their home schedule next weekend against two Sun Belt Conference opponents when they host Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday (Sept. 28) and Arkansas State on Sunday (Sept. 30). Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
