Sept. 28, 2001

Box Score

DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer team got a goal from junior Nic Hartman (Littleton, Colo.) with just over one minute remaining to tie the game with Alabama A&M and the two teams played two scoreless overtimes Friday afternoon as the game ended in a 1-1 draw. With the tie, Denver's record on the season now stands at 4-2-2. Alabama A&M is 4-1-2.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first in the 31st minute when Abdou Manneh took a pass from his brother Musa and beat Denver keeper Parker Jarvis (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) that gave Alabama A&M a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers came out swinging in the second frame, outshooting the Bulldogs 10-0 in the second half and finally getting a goal past Alabama A&M keeper James Ssemambo in the 90th minute. Hartman took a beautiful pass from senior teammate Michael Piserchio (Littleton, Colo.) and beat Ssemambo on Denver's 17th shot. The Pioneers outshot the Bulldogs 27-9 in the game.

The Pioneers played down a man for the final 66 minutes as freshman Mike Stark (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was issued his second yellow card, and thus an automatic ejection, in the 55th minute. The Pioneers were not shaken however, as they blistered the Bulldogs with 10 shots in the second half and didn't allow one to get near Jarvis.

"This was an extremely physical game and our guys just didn't let up," head coach Chad Ashton said. "Thank goodness for Hartman, that was just a beautiful goal and couldn't have come at a better time."

In the day's first game, the UMKC Kangaroos defeated New Mexico by a score of 3-0, with all three goals coming in the second half. Goalkeeper Beau Williams had four saves for the Kangaroos as they improved to 5-1-0 on the season. Denver plays UMKC Sunday afternoon.

Denver is next in action Sunday when they take on UMKC at 2 p.m. Alabama A&M will play New Mexico in the day's first game at 10 a.m. with Denver's women's team playing Arkansas State at noon.
